Lucca — The City That Refused to Be Conquered
The most perfectly preserved walled city in Italy — and the least visited by tour groups
There are famous Tuscan cities — Florence, Siena, Pisa — and then there is Lucca, which quietly gets on with being magnificent while the crowds go elsewhere. Surrounded by its Renaissance walls so wide you can cycle on top of them, Lucca has a calm, lived-in elegance that immediately feels different. This is a city where people actually live, work and eat — not just one that exists for tourism.

The heart of Lucca is the Piazza dell'Anfiteatro — an oval piazza built directly on the foundations of a Roman amphitheatre from the 2nd century AD. The medieval buildings that replaced it followed the exact elliptical outline of the arena. Sit at a table under the arches with an espresso and look around you: you are sitting inside a 2,000-year-old Roman building that doesn't know it's a ruin.

Puccini was born here. The Cathedral of San Martino contains the Volto Santo, a wooden crucifix venerated across medieval Europe. The church of San Michele in Foro sits on the ancient Roman forum and has one of the most theatrical façades in Italy. And everywhere — up every alley, behind every piazza — there are olive oil shops, paper makers, leather craftsmen and bakeries selling buccellato, the local sweet bread that has been made here since the Middle Ages.

Lucca rewards those who slow down. No single monument to tick off and leave — just a city to absorb, lane by lane, hour by hour.
Renaissance walls wide enough to walk and cycle on — a 4km circuit above the city
Piazza dell'Anfiteatro — a medieval square built inside a Roman amphitheatre
Birthplace of Puccini — opera, art and architecture at every turn
One of the best-preserved medieval centres in Italy — no mass tourism, real city life
Exceptional local food and craft shops — olive oil, ceramics, leather, buccellato bread

Fattoria San Donato
Loc. San Donato 6, San Gimignano · A working family farm since the 13th century · sandonato.it
You have seen the Tuscan vineyard landscape in films, on wine labels, in your dreams — the rolling golden hills, the cypress trees, the stone farmhouse at the end of a dirt road. Fattoria San Donato is that place. Exactly that place. And tonight you get to sit down to dinner inside it.

Just 2km from San Gimignano's medieval towers, this is a real, working family farm — not a converted resort, not a restaurant that happens to have a vineyard. The Fenzi family has farmed this land for generations, growing Vernaccia di San Gimignano (the only white wine in Tuscany with its own DOCG designation), olive oil, saffron and every vegetable on the table. What you eat tonight was grown here, on this hill, in this soil.

The dinner is served in the stone-vaulted farmhouse with its open fireplace, wooden beams and terracotta floors — the kind of room that hasn't changed much in several centuries, and all the better for it. The table is long, the portions are generous, the wine flows freely and the company is always excellent. Antipasti of local salumi and cheeses, hand-rolled pici pasta, slow-cooked meats, and desserts made from the farm's own produce.

This is not a restaurant dinner. This is a Tuscan family welcoming you to their home. The difference is everything.
The vineyard landscape you've seen in every Italian film — real, beautiful, yours tonight
Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG — grown on this hillside, poured at this table
Stone farmhouse dining room — open fireplace, wooden beams, centuries of warmth
Everything on the table grown, raised or made on the farm — true farm-to-fork
A family welcoming you to their home — not a restaurant, a tradition

Staying at the resort? The Cappuccina pool terrace has panoramic views of San Gimignano's famous towers. San Gimignano itself is a 5-minute drive — walk the medieval streets, taste Vernaccia in the wine bars, or visit the excellent Museo Civico. Ask Carmela for restaurant recommendations if you're eating in town tonight.
