Highland Folklore
Beware the Kelpie
As you wind deeper into the Highlands today, keep an eye on the lochs we pass. Highland legend tells of the kelpie — a shape-shifting water spirit said to haunt Scotland's rivers and lochs, most often appearing as a beautiful, gentle horse grazing invitingly by the water's edge. Climb onto its back, the old stories warn, and its skin turns sticky as tar — you're carried straight down into the depths, never to resurface. Some say the kelpie can also take human form, appearing as a handsome stranger to lure the unwary to the water. Locals in the Highlands still tell their children not to go too close to a loch after dark... just in case. The Kelpies, two enormous 30-metre horse-head sculptures near Falkirk, were built in tribute to this very legend — a reminder of just how deep these old stories still run in the Scottish psyche.

St Andrews

St Andrews, Scotland
Included · St Andrews, Fife
The Home of Golf — and So Much More
Golfers will already know St Andrews as the sport's spiritual home, but there's far more here than fairways. This is one of Scotland's oldest and most beautiful towns — a wind-swept coastal gem of medieval streets, a world-famous university (Prince William and Kate's alma mater), and the dramatic ruins of a once-mighty cathedral overlooking the North Sea.
→
The Old Course
Walk the famous Swilcan Bridge, crossed by every golfing legend from Old Tom Morris to Tiger Woods — even non-golfers find it strangely moving.
→
St Andrews Cathedral Ruins
Once the largest cathedral in Scotland — now a hauntingly beautiful ruin above the harbour, with sweeping coastal views.
→
West Sands Beach
The very beach used for the opening scene of Chariots of Fire — a beautiful stretch of sand if you fancy a coastal stroll before we depart.

Optional Experience · 13:15

Blair Castle

Blair Castle, Perthshire
Optional · Blair Atholl, Perthshire
A Fairytale Castle in the Heart of Perthshire
Gleaming white and turreted against the Highland hills, Blair Castle has been the seat of the Dukes of Atholl for over 750 years — and it's still home to Europe's last remaining private army, the Atholl Highlanders. Step inside for grand halls hung with weaponry, portraits, and centuries of Highland history, from Jacobite risings to royal visits.
🌿
Don't rush off after the castle! Blair Castle's walled gardens — Diana's Grove and the wider grounds — are genuinely spectacular and easy to miss if you're short on time. If you can, take a few extra minutes to wander them before we depart; towering trees, sweeping lawns, and some of the prettiest grounds in Perthshire.

Optional Experience · 16:20

Highland Farm Experience

Sheepdogs at work on a Highland farm
Optional · Working Highland Farm
The Real Stars of the Highlands: The Sheepdogs
If you only do one optional experience in the Highlands, seriously consider this one. We visit a genuine working Highland farm to watch something most visitors to Scotland never get to see up close — a skilled shepherd and his border collies working a flock of sheep across open hillside, entirely on whistle and voice command. It is mesmerising, it is moving, and it is proper Highland life, not a show put on for tourists.
→
Working Sheepdogs in Action
Watch highly trained border collies gather and pen a flock in real time — a display of teamwork between dog and shepherd that's centuries in the making.
→
Real Highland Life
This is a genuine working farm, not a staged attraction — you're seeing exactly how Highland farmers have managed their flocks for generations.
→
A Quick Turnaround
Remember — the coach heads straight back out after we drop bags at the hotel, so it's a bathroom break only for this one. Worth the rush!
